During the official opening of Singapore''s pavilion at the 52nd VeniceBiennial, in June 2007, the Artistic Director of the 2nd Singapore Biennale was announced: Once again, the Japanese curator and art critic Fumio Nanjo, who is also the head of the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, will chart the direction and programming for Singapore''s visual arts Biennale, as he already did in its first edition in 2006. With this re-appointment, the organizers expect a greater continuity for an event that is still new, and a deepening in its reach and engagement with the city and audiences.
For SB2008, Nanjo has chosen to work with two emerging curators from Singapore and the region:
Joselina Cruz, an independent curator currently working on projects in Manila and Singapore. Formerly, she was a curator at the Singapore Art Museum and the Lopez Museum in Manila.
Matthew Ngui, who is one of Singapore''s most well-known artists. In 1997, he was the first artist of his country invited to exhibit at Documenta in Kassel. In 2001, he was also one of four artists presented by Singapore in its first national pavilion at a Venice Biennial.
Like in the case of the 1st Singapore Biennale, Universes in Universe will again cooperate with the organizers, accompanying the preparations of the 2nd Edition, and covering extensively the exhibition and event.
